Peace Action: Struggles for a Decolonised and Demilitarised Oceania and East Asia
This book contains stories about activists, their organising and their causes, and the interconnections between social struggles separated by the vast expanse of Te Moana-Nui-A-Kiwa. It includes chapters on the Doctrine of Discovery, on protecting Ihumātao, on anti-militarist organising in South Korea, on campaigning against US military training in Hawai'i and Japan, on French colonialism in Ma'ohi Nui and Kanaky, about Korean peace movements in Aotearoa and Australia, about Indonesia's occupation of West Papua, on feminist resistance to war in so-called Australia, on NZ's history of Chinese-Māori solidarity, and on peace gardening at Parihaka. It is a book to inspire, to educate and to enrage. It is a book to motivate us all to peace action.
Edited by Valerie Morse with contributions by Tina Ngata, Arama Rata, Pania Newton, Qiane Matata-Sipu, Rebekah Jaung, Kyle Kajihiro, Emalani Case, Dr Pounamu Jade Aikman, Tuhi-Ao Bailey, Jungmin Choi, Tony Fala, Zelda Grimshaw, Frances Hancock, Carwyn Jones, Yamin Kogoya, Jenny Bol Jun Lee-Morgan, Marylou Mahe, Ena Manuireva, Mizuki Nakamura, Dr Jae-Eun Noh, Dr Joon-Shik Shin, Mengzhu Fu and Jos Wheeler. "By their nature, activists take action and do things rather than just speak or write about things, as is the academic tradition, so this is an important, unique and rare opportunity to learn from their insights, knowledge, and experience. ... Both passion and ethics are evident in the stories about involvement in de-colonised movements that are ‘situated in their relevant Indigenous practice’ and anti-militarist movements that ‘actively practice peace making’. While their activism is unquestioned, the contributors come with other impressive credentials. Not only do they actively put into practice their strong values, but many are also researchers and scholars. ... The resistance from the Indigenous Peoples has been evident from the beginnings of imperialist invasions and militarisation of the Pacific, despite the arbitrary violence that accompanied these. Resistance continues, as the contributors to Peace Action demonstrate, and the contributions reveal the very many faces and facets of non-violent resistance that works towards an eventual peace with justice." - Heather Devere, Pacific Journalism Review
"An invaluable and beautifully illustrated handbook of “peace action,” summing up the mahi that needs doing for decolonisation and demilitarisation. ... The fight for Te Moana is in good guardianship hands with a new
generation of activists and advocates."- David Robie, Okinawan Journal of Island Studies
